How do you stay positive in a negative world?



I like to be a positive person. I feel like I wasted too much of my life being negative.
Wishing for the things I didn't have, complaining about things.

In 2000, I moved to Banff, AB, Canada for almost a year and it completely changed my life.
Banff is town  surrounded by mountains. If I was having a bad day, it was hard to stay in a grumpy mood when surrounded by such beauty.

I decided then that I was going to appreciate my life and be thankful for what I did have in my life.

I know not everyone can move to the mountains or to the ocean for a year.

Once I moved back to the City of Edmonton, I found it difficult to keep positive in the fast-pace of a city. Being surrounded by buildings, people and vehicles. Everyone is just getting where they are going.

I accepted that I was living in a city now and had to deal with it. I began to appreciate the things around me, like a tree in full bloom or the cute elderly couple holding hands walking down the street.

I was thankful for what I had, roof over my head and a job to pay bills.

I still have my bad days where life just gets to me but I am able to bounce back to the positive person I like to be.


Here are a few ways I like to stay positive in our busy negative world.



Smile. A smile is a simple but powerful tool. It automatically makes us feel better and touches the people around us.



Give yourself permission to be positive and enjoy life. Being positive is much more fun than complaining all the time.


Find a quiet place to be by yourself for just a few minutes each day. This will allow you to relax and focus. Take deep breaths and let the positivity flow. 



Focus in on a positive idea. Focus on something (anything) positive, big or small!



It’s your responsibility. Your life is your responsibility. 
Bad, even awful, things may have happened to you in the past. But tomorrow is yours. What you do, how you approach it, and whether or not you find happiness is all within your control.

People blame their partners, co-workers, parents, siblings and friends for their troubles.  Change it. Our life is ultimately up to us. YOLO (You only live once, enjoy it). Make it beautiful. Life’s too short.


Focus on your blessings. Instead of looking at all that is wrong with this world or in your life, concentrate on all the amazing things that are right.

Look at the wonderful things that happen day in and day out.

If you are in good health with no major medical problems, then be thankful for that.
Maybe your job isn't bringing in millions of dollars, but it’s paying the bills, you have a roof over head, rejoice in that fact.

Your family has flaws and isn't perfect, but if they’re always supportive and pull together when you need it, then be happy about that.

Things don’t have to be perfect.

The more you focus on the blessings in your life, the more they multiply. You begin to see the world from a different perspective so instead of being quick to point out when something is wrong, you become faster at pointing out what is right which feels much better.


Be Thankful. This one goes with “Focus on your Blessings” but I think it is important to thank God, Ali, Jehovah or any spiritual connection you have, for the things you have in your life. 
We all have a plan and whoever is watching over you needs to be thanked for the good things in your life.


Bad days will come. You will have bad days; it’s a part of life. Remind yourself that life will swing back and you’ll be up again.
