Project Glimmer serves at-risk teenage girls and women—by collecting and gifting new (or like new) jewelry, accessories, (new) beauty products and gift cards to inspire these girls and women to believe in themselves by letting them know their community cares; and when they feel valued by their community, they feel worthy. This makes all the difference in choosing their future. And when a girl changes her future, she changes the world.
Project Glimmer's founder, Sonja Hoel Perkins,
attended a holiday benefit for the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program. She later called the San Francisco
Firefighters Toy Program to learn how she could give more. While there were
plenty of gifts for kids, there were never enough gifts for teenage girls setting
the stage for Project Glimmer.
That year, Sonja launched the first “Glimmer Drive.” She
encouraged friends and family to donate costume jewelry, gift cards, and new
make-up and beauty products, and gathered up her friends and friend of friends to
help box and polish the gifts like new.
Since 2009, Project Glimmer has given more than 120,000
gifts to thousands of women and girls through over 100 community partners in 21
US states. Project Glimmer now gives gifts for Mother’s Day, Birthdays and
Graduation gifts in addition to Holiday gifts.
This is the Manifesto from their website:
We are for the girls. The big girls, the little girls, the
girls in-between. We believe that every girl is defined by her choices -- what
she does and doesn’t do.
When a girl feels valued on the outside, she feels worthy
on the inside, and this makes all the difference in choosing her future.
And when a girl changes her future, she changes the
world.
We are Project Glimmer. We give a
little glimmer to the girls who need it most.
There are a few different ways you could get involved
with Project Glimmer to give back this holiday season:
Give a gift!
Do you have extra jewelry or
other accessories laying around? Clear out the drawers and closets and bring a
little glimmer to a young woman’s holiday.
Host A Glimmer Drive!
It’s the same concept as a toy
drive, except the gifts collected are new or like new jewelry, makeup, beauty
products, gift cards and accessories. It’s a fun addition to any holiday
party that you can do in 4 easy
steps.
Make a donation.
A monetary donation helps Project Glimmer fulfill its mission to inspire young women to believe in themselves. Tuesday 11/29 is #GivingTuesday (following Cyber Monday) and is a great way for you to give back! This could also make a great post on social too @projectglimmer~Jennifer
