From the rose-hued lamps that have a relaxing glow to the
blue pebbles that melt ice on our sidewalks, salt is a substance with endless
uses.
It’s most commonly thought of as a flavor enhancer for our
food but salt is also a cosmetic ingredient that can be found in many beauty
products.
Origin of Salt
Salt is a natural mineral made up of sodium and chlorine.
It’s been used by humans for thousands of years, and has
played an important role in preserving perishable foods—ancient Greeks and
Romans packed their freshly caught meat and fish in salt to keep it edible for
months.
Salt is a natural preservative because salt attracts water
molecules away from microorganisms, preventing the microorganisms from
reproducing, which keep the product from spoiling.
Salt can be produced in three different ways.
- Deep-shaft mining extracts salt from underground deposits,
and mostly produces rock salt for de-icing roads and sidewalks.
- Table salts are mostly produced using solution mining, where
fresh water is injected over salt beds to create a brine, which is then pumped
out and sent to a facility for evaporation.
- Salt can be harvested from the sea. Naturally salty
sea water is put into shallow pools, where wind and sun evaporate the water and
leave the salt behind.
